FAQs

What happens during a Functional Integration® session?

A session always begins with a discussion to determine the needs and desires of the student. The trajectory of the lesson unfolds from this discussion.

A lesson usually combines verbal and hands-on input to make the student aware of their habitual movement patterns and offer options for new movements.

You will remain clothed throughout the lesson so it’s important that you wear comfortable clothing, something that is not too loose or too binding. Please AVOID the following if possible:

  • hoodies or shirts that have a high collar

  • zippers or buttons that run the length of your spine

  • sports bras or anything to tight around the chest

  • skirts and jeans

You may be lying on a wide low table, sitting, standing, or walking at various points in a lesson. Props and pillows are utilized to make sure you are comfortable throughout the process.

All movements should be comfortable and painless and it’s important that you communicate any discomfort you experience at the time it occurs.

What happens during a Structural Integration session?

The Anatomy Trains Structural Integration series is comprised of either 3 or 12 sessions, each with specific areas of fascia to be addressed. Prior to the start of each appointment you will be given a written description of all areas that may be potentially addressed during that session.

In the case of a stand-alone structural integration appointment, the areas to be addressed will be determined through the intake process.

Possible techniques used in a session include:

  • long and slow compression strokes

  • finger gliding through fascia or muscular septum

  • muscle belly rocking

  • pin and stretch

  • pinch and roll of superficial facia

  • active and passive movements—like breathing, flexion/extension/rotation of the extremities, etc.— will likely be combined with any of the above techniques

During each session you may feel moderate discomfort or pain at the area being worked. Tell your practitioner of these sensations at the time you experience them so that adjustments can be made. Consider that all work be received at a level that is on the low to medium side of your pain tolerance range.

Wear comfortable clothing that will allow access to the skin. Shorts or underwear that can be pulled up comfortably to the hip bone without risk of genital exposure is the ideal option for men and women. In addition, women should wear camisoles or loose fitting bras, or a comfortable bikini works too. Appropriate draping will be provided at all times to cover areas that aren’t being addressed.

What happens during an Awareness Through Movement® class and Private session?

Each class is different and movements can vary upon the theme of the class. Classes may be done lying or sitting in different positions on the floor, although there may also be some standing and walking involved during a lesson.

Some positions are modifiable so that a chair maybe used if getting on the floor is not possible.

Wear comfortable clothing that is not to loose or too binding. AVOID the following if possible:

  • hoodies or shirts that have a high collar

  • zippers or buttons that run the length of your spine

  • sports bras or anything to tight around the chest

  • skirts and jeans

How to do a lesson:

  • Have a small stack of hand towels as a support or a small firm pillow to place under your head as needed.

  • Seated lessons will best be done in a firm chair that does not roll.

  • Go very slowly.

  • Pause the lesson as needed to give yourself time.

  • Move within your own comfortable range.

  • Do NOT push or strain. You will get more benefits by doing less.

  • Try to let go of doing the movements the “right” way.

  • Be curious and enjoy the changes.

  • Follow any healthcare restrictions you have been given.
